ShimRex® - Compact Heat Exchanger and Compact Heat Exchanger Reactor
Often referred to as a Printed Circuit Heat Exchanger (PCHE) or Micro-channel heat exchanger, ShimRex heat exchangers consist of etched plates stacked and diffusion bonded. Diffusion bonding gives the heat exchanger greater strength in extreme conditions when compared to other traditional methods of manufacturing. Both compact heat exchangers and compact heat exchanger reactors can be built using this technology.
Advantages of ShimRex Heat Exchanger
Custom design for exact client needs
Very high temperature and pressure applications
Internal ligaments for increased mixing and even higher heat transfer
Tight approach temperatures (less than 2F for some applications)
Relatively low pressure drop
Extremely high surface area-to-volume ratio
Compactness
FinRex® - Compact Heat Exchanger and Compact Heat Exchanger Reactor
Often referred to as Brazed Plate Fin heat exchangers, FinRex heat exchangers consist of stamped fins and sheets stacked together and Vacuumed Brazed. This style of heat exchanger offers larger channel sizes while still being able to reach higher temperatures and pressures.

Reactor and Catalyst Testing
CompRex offers full-service catalyst evaluation using our compact heat exchanger reactor, which provides near isothermal conditions in commercial type reactors to maximize the catalyst performance. The reactor channel size is the same as the commercial channel size. The heat exchanger reactor can promptly input or remove the heat from the reaction. Our test facility is able to operate at high temperature, e.g. 1500°F, and high pressure, e.g. 1000 psi, for many different processes, especially for highly exothermic or endothermic reactions. CompRex can evaluate the performance of your catalyst and analyze the end products in commercial type reactors.
Advantages of ShimRex Heat Exchanger Reactor
High temperature/high pressure reactions
Channel size same as commercial scale reactor
Almost uniform temperature distribution
Heat exchanger reactors suitable for highly exothermic or endothermic reactions
Intermittent injection as needed within the reactor block
Multiple intermittent reactant injection at different locations as needed
Tight temperature control
Small catalyst particles for high selectivity and productivity
Compact design with smaller footprint and auxiliary equipment
Diffusion Bonding Services
Diffusion Bonding is a direct solid-state diffusion of atoms to connect metal. This process involves the material under pressure and heating the metal for a specific time period in a controlled atmosphere.
CompRex has a history of developing new bonding processes for unique materials. Some of these materials include Inconel alloys 740H and 617, as well as stainless steels. Others have only bonded these Inconel’s using a Transient Liquid Phase. CompRex can bond this material without the transient liquid phase layer, making it a far superior bond.
Diffusion bonding is not just used for heat exchangers. Any complex assembly that is difficult or impossible to manufacture with traditional methods, typically with small internal passages, is a great fit of diffusion bonding.
Wastewater Treatment
CompRex offers a new innovative wastewater treat process and and diffusion bonded reactor for supercritical water oxidation (SCWO). CompRex is in a unique position in developing and commercializing a SCWO process with a diffusion bonded Inconel reactor reaching high efficiency. To learn more please click link below.
